You decide you want to redecorate your house and do an overall make over. But your tiles are meant to be permanent and you know removing them will never be an easy task. Here are some tips on how you can remove your tiles easier. First off, you need to prioritize your safety. Your eyes must be protected during tile removal and other excess particles. Broken pieces of the tile can seriously harm your eyes. Also, protect your hands with thick tough gloves to make sure you don’t injure your hands in the process while using a tile scraper. A tile scraper is a must during tile removal. You will also need a cold chisel, a hammer, a bladed putty knife and a grout saw. The first thing you need to do is break the grout around the tiles with the hammer and the cold chisel and then scrape it off with the tile scrapper once it is easier to remove. After that, clean and vacuum the area.
If your tiles are on a backer board base, the tile removal process is a little bit more complicated. You will need to remove both the tiles and the backer board. Removing the tiles uses the same process as stated above; however, after you remove 4-5 tiles, you will use a hammer to pulverize the backer board so it can be removed. Slide the tile scraper under it and then clean and vacuum the area again.
Some of you though might just want to remove single tiles and want to mix in there different colored tiles. This tile removal is much easier than trying to remove an entire tile bed. You can use the same process above or just the grout saw to remove the grout around the tile. Break it up by using the chisel and hammer. Clean up and vacuum as usual.
Most houses use carpets as flooring instead of tiles. Carpet removal does not require any special skill or tool. Before removing your carpet, make sure it is clean and you do not get all dusty during the process. Go to each corner of the carpet and pull it from the tack strip. Cut a strip of the carpet then start rolling the carpet. You might need help with this one so make sure housemates or friends are with you to have a flawless roll. Secure the carpet roll with high-endurance tape. Continue cutting and rolling until all the carpet padding is removed. Remove the tack strip with a pry bar and hammer. If you are changing your carpet with a new one, you do not need to remove the tack strip. If you will be replacing it with tiles or something else, then you must. Carpets are also sometimes glued down. You will need to go to your nearest hardware shop and purchase something that can soften the adhesive.
Tile removal and carpet removal are expensive when you ask someone to do it, so just do it yourself.
